Meet the finalists: Like Mother, Like Son

>> Thursday 8 July 2010

Today we hear from our very first family team into NomNomNom. It's Utku and his mum Armagan, aka Like Mother, Like Son.

Like Mother, Like Son

What makes you two the perfect NomNomNom pairing?

We have been cooking together ever since I was 3 years old. That's 20 years of practice.

What impact do you think social networks and bloggers have had on the world of cooking and/or restaurant reviewing?

I'm so much more likely to take a recommendation for a recipe or a restaurant from a friend, or a blogger whom I have a dialogue with. I know I'm not the only one, and the power of social networks in this space will only increase over time!

Can you tell us about a memorable disaster you’ve had in the kitchen?

A couple of years ago, I invited my parents round for a New Year's Eve dinner. Not 10 minutes after starting the preparations, I sliced my hand on the sharpest knife in the house and was one step from spending the night in A&E. I think we ended up having cheese on toast for dinner.

Which ingredient can you not live without?

Probably tomato paste. Very Mediterranean of course but we use the stuff in almost everything. The good stuff with a bit of olive oil can bring any dish to life.

And finally, what is the special element that will ensure that your team wins?

The culinary experience of eating from all world cuisines in London over 10 years, our Mediterranean roots and love for the food of the region, and that special mother and son connection!

Follow Armagan and Utku on Twitter on Sunday, to see if the family connection works and they keep their cool in the kitchen!
